How To Analyze Your Score

I am sure that all of the veterans already know this or figured it out but I always wonders what in the dickens all of those folks did with all of the score sheets that they filled out during each bridge game.  I could see that checking the scores put in by the director might be useful but beyond that I had no clue.  Not only that, but consistent scores in the 30% and 40% range left me wondering what I could do to improve.  I always thought that my weak spot was defense but a few weeks ago I decided to actually look at my offense and defense.   Doing this quickly showed me that my offense was weaker than my defense.  I then got out my book, 25 ways to take more tricks as a declarer, and went to work.  Again, analyzing my scores showed an immediate improvement.  I was working on the wrong aspect of my game!

Here is how I did my analysis.  I am sure that more can be done and I am sure that I will get feedback but this is so simple, it is ridiculous!

  1. Take your bridge results and identify each contract that you played.
    1. Add up the number of boards that you were significantly better than average
    2. Add up the number of boards that you were significantly below  average
    3. Divide a by b to get a percentage of good vs. bad.  This will give your offensive score.
  2. Now identify each contract that your opponents played and do the same steps as in #1 to get a percentage of good vs. bad for defense.
  3. Now compare the 2 percentages and work on the one with the smallest number.  Obviously defense is affected by your partner as well as you but this will give a start.  Similarly,  your offensive score is affected by your partner's bidding.
  4. Now you can analyze your partner's offensive score and if you are better than he or she, you can call them and point that out.

Now I will sit back and wait for the helpful suggestions to add to this simple list.  That way we will all benefit.
